We are limited in knowledge regarding Jesus’ childhood and adolescence, but there is one story in Luke which points out how much Jesus prioritized faith, and how he “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52)
When Jesus was twelve years old, he came to the Festival of the Passover with his parents. After the festival was over and everyone was headed home, Jesus stayed back in the temple in Jerusalem, asking questions of the teachers and sharing some of his own thoughts. His parents did not know where he was, but when they finally found him, they questioned why he did this, because it created much concern on their part.
Jesus answer was quite simple and straightforward, “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49) They did not understand this, at least not at the time, but the point is that his devotion to God took first priority. He could be obedient to his earthly parents and at the same time have unwavering obedience to God.
When we put God first, all of the love and devotion to our family and friends does not have to be compromised. Our hearts are in the right place when we adhere to the teachings of scripture. We are not out to offend anyone when we keep our eyes on Jesus.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me realize that putting you first helps everything else fall in place. Thank you for teaching me all that is so important in my life and the life of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
