“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.” (Luke 4:1-2)

It is worth mentioning that Luke 4 follows up directly with something that happened with Jesus in chapter 3 after he was baptized, “and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.” (Luke 3:22) This reaffirms how the Holy Spirit was at work.  Right away, the Spirit was needed, as Jesus was fasting in the wilderness and was being tempted by the devil.  Jesus went from a spiritual high (baptism) to a low (temptation in the wilderness) We find out that because of the Spirit, Jesus dealt with temptation and could overcome it.

Sometimes, just as we experience some form of victory or accomplishment in our lives, we come down from that and face temptation or difficult times, and then we have to rely on the Holy Spirit of God.  Asking God to help you is the right thing to do.  We can’t do this ourselves.  Whenever we are tempted or ready to give up because of our circumstances, ask God for help.  He’s here and is ready to help.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I realize that I cannot rely on my own strength.  Thank you for being here for me at all times, because I can depend on you.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
